Outreach
As the faculty advisor to PSU-Altoona's Biology Club and the local chapter of the Biology Honors Society (Tribeta), I have been involved in a number of different outreach and community events. If you are a student and would like to get involved in a local outreach event, or would like to organize something in the area please get in touch!
Volunteering at Fundraising Events for The Giorgio Foundation
Bio Club and Tribeta have volunteered to support the fundraising efforts of The Giorgio Foundation. The Giorgio Foundation is a local charity that raises awareness and seeks to fund the research of pediatric neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), a devastating genetic disorder which causes uncontrolled tumor growth. To find out more: https://www.endnf1.org/.
Brain Awareness Week
Brain Awareness week is a global campaign spearheaded by the Dana Foundation to promote and spread the word about the progress and benefits of brain research. Penn State Altoona's program typically comes on the heels of the annual international celebration in March or early April. Speakers, demonstrations, and lab tours are offered throughout the week. We also offer a Kids’ Day, in which children ages 6-12 can participate in fun activities and games to learn about the brain.
Build Our Kids' Success (BOKS) Program
BOKS is a free physical activity program that improves our children physically, mentally and socially by strengthening their minds and bodies through movement. The program, which is spearheaded by Reebok, is focused around the idea that exercise boosts the brain, and can improve academic performance in the classroom. Dr. DePasquale works with local schools to bring BOKS to the community. For more information, please visit: https://www.bokskids.org
